New PDAs – Public Displays of Art

Fine Arts LA Echo Park Art Walk

Angelenos love a good art walk. We hit the pavement for art walks all around town, including downtown, Silverlake, and the Miracle Mile.  And, we walk the art walk down La Cienega and in circles at Bergamot when galleries stay open late for their openings. Not only do we have a chance to get the latest scoop from our friends armed with Tecates, we have a higher chance to run into one of our favorite food trucks. We have a sneaking suspicion that since we keep running into them when we don’t follow their Twitter feeds, they’ve been reading ours…

Right before Valentine’s Day, we’re sure that you are bracing yourself for unexpected PDAs (Public Displays of Affection). Re-think this idea as a group of artists are launching another type of PDA (Public Displays of Art) in art walk form straight through Echo Park.

These PDAs are much more palatable for your art starved tastes. You’ll find: chain link fence galleries, driveway theaters, a hands on crafting station, performance art, intersection musical performances, outdoor movie screenings, sculptures, parking lot mini concerts, and other various creative and mind stimulating public displays of art.

If you tweet about it, food trucks will come.

The Echo Park Art Walk is this Saturday, February 6th, 12 – 6pm, 12–6pm. The Echo Park Art Walk begins at Blue Collar Pet Supplies (1533 Echo Park Ave.) and travels through to FIX coffee shop (2100 Echo Park Ave.) Click here for more info.

Behind The Canvas

Fine Arts LA Santa Fe Art Colony.jpg

Los Angeles has created a booming, commercial market out of “behind-the-scenes” movie set tours and star maps that give people a chance to see how the “magic” is made. If you haven’t been to Universal Studios, Disney Land or California Adventure you at least have sent an out of town guest there while they were visiting! Even though this city is known for the entertainment industry, this weekend skip the theme parks and head downtown to the 20th Annual Santa Fe Art Colony Open Studio/Artwalk.

Named for its location on Santa Fe Avenue, the settlement houses 57 studio residences and once a year over 40 residents of the colony open their private studios to the public.

Though the finished product of a film, a play, or a painting can be inspiring or enlightening, it is a truly exclusive experience to see an artists work within the context of its creation. This event allows a glimpse into the creative environment of the artist and provides insight to the artistic process that cannot be absorbed from a gallery exhibition. Artists will be on hand to answer questions, and it is a rare treat to see new works in progress, finished pieces, and new studies in the making.

The Artwalk is the easiest of its kind to tour as the architectural layout of the grounds is compact and, of course, enhanced by the work of its residents. It’s also a great opportunity to purchase work directly from the artist and see what is coming up in the LA art scene.  Consider it another way you can impress your friends with your local, up and coming taste in art.  How refined!
